Gentle treatment of tooth decay with high-quality materials by Dr. Paulsen in Bad Honnef near Bonn
Despite good at-home oral hygiene, a "cavity" can develop, which must be treated and supplied with a filling in order to stop advancement of the tooth decay and prevent possible loss of teeth or inflammations.
In our dental practice, we utilize advanced and gentle dental procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of tooth decay as well as high-quality filling materials, so that you can keep your natural teeth as long as possible.
What is caries and how does it develop?
The term caries is derived from the Latin word "caries" and means "to be brittle" or "decay," or tooth decay (caries dentium in medical terms). If teeth are affected by caries, the dental hard tissue, the dental enamel, and occasionally also the dentin disintegrate.
How does a "cavity" develop? Food residue (particularly sugar or starch), that collects in the inter-dental spaces and dental pockets that cannot be reached with the toothbrush, can form dental plaque together with components of saliva. This dental plaque, if not regularly removed, is an excellent breeding ground for certain bacteria that are present in the mouth. If bacteria multiply in association with metabolism, acids that attack the dental enamel may be produced. Over time, this process continues to deplete the dental enamel of important minerals to the point where visible decay develops. If this process is not stopped in time by the proper dental treatment, it may destroy the tooth completely.
Depending on the condition of the teeth, what mineral content they have, whether tooth displacement is present or a genetic disposition exists, caries can develop more or less quickly. An important factor are dietary habits (e.g. lots of sugar) and at-home dental hygiene measures.
Detection and treatment of caries
The earlier caries is detected, the less of the natural tooth substance must be removed. This is an important reason for regular check-ups with your dentist.
During an examination we first prepare a bite-wing image (digital x-ray) and then examine your teeth with special magnifying spectacles. Depending on the findings, we create a customized treatment plan.
If the tooth decay is still in its initial stage (initial caries), intensive professional teeth cleaning and subsequent fluoride treatment for mineralization of the teeth can possibly avoid drilling and stop the caries.
However, if the enamel of the tooth has been broken, meaning that cavities in the tooth are already present, the hard dental substance affected by decay must be carefully removed. In our dental practice in Bad Honnef near Bonn we therefore use pain-free, minimally invasive methods in order to sacrifice as little as possible of the the health tooth substance.
For the rebuilding or reconstruction of smaller tooth defects in the area of the frontal or side teeth we prefer to use an extremely strong and durable filling material: ceramic reinforced, high-quality synthetic material, also called composite filling (white filling).
For larger areas of damage in the area of the side teeth we prefer to complete the reconstruction with high-quality ceramic inlays.
In case of extensive tooth decay, where the tooth has been affected to the extent that a filling is no longer possible, or if parts of a tooth have been lost through an accident, the still firmly rooted but severely damaged tooth must be rebuilt. As a rule, this is done with a crown. The highest quality and most esthetic solution, which is preferred by us, is the placement of a fully ceramic crown, which resembles the shape and color of a natural tooth most closely. However, if the decayed tooth is so damaged that it can no longer be saved, the created gap is closed with a fully ceramic bridge or an implant.
Tips for the prevention of caries (bad teeth or cavities)
At the very top of the list in the prevention of caries is of course consistent, proper and regular at-home oral hygiene. We recommend the electric sonic toothbrush and additional daily use of dental floss with fluoride.
Regular dental check-ups and prophylaxis measures by your dentist in order to detect tooth decay and possible other diseases of the periodontium as early as possible.
Professional teeth cleaning every 6 months is the best prevention for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
Excellent dental care that is performed regularly at home and by your dentist (PTC) is the best guarantee that caries will be prevented.
